matera
Our guide, Donald, kept mentioning the "caves" and jokingly said we'd be like the Flinstones, to the left is a picture of our room...trust me, Fred, Wilma and Pebbles didn't live like this!
It was truly another place where the more you walked, the more you kept saying "wow!" as you had camera in hand and snapped yet another photo.
Thank goodness for digital cameras....
Matera is out-of-the-way for most American tourists. It is truly a gem....

The Sassi
The Sassi di Matera (meaning "stones of Matera") are ancient cave dwellings in the city of Matera.
Yes, we stayed in a "cave" but like so many of these out-of-the-way villages we saw, each step was more lovely and interesting than the prior. The hotel was incredible, and as you can see from the photo above, the views were remarkable.
One thing I loved about the tour were the local guides that would add-n the perspective that only someone who called the village "home" would be able to do. Learning how families would live in these "caves", along with their farm animals, up until after WWII...and now they are being upgraded (like our hotel) and it's more of the "trendy" part of town.
We also got to see parts of where they filmed the "Passion of Christ". Incredible.
